Book: Dreamy Portfolio

About the Project:

More than two years ago, I shared a guide for how to make a screw post portfolio, after designing one to display my own paintings.

Since then, I’ve lived what feels like many creative lives. I’ve logged several hundred hours of bookbinding experience, and completed more than 30 such portfolios on a commission basis for other artists.

With each new portfolio, I refined my skills and picked-up new techniques. My old portfolio, once a source of pride, became annoyingly out of touch with my new standards.

Dreamy Portfolio is both a funeral for my old portfolio, and a challenge to myself to keep making each book better than the last. May it too grow to be painfully imprecise and suboptimal to me.

The entire book is clad in buttery French flocked velvet that looks like the sky on a summer afternoon.

“I would drape myself if velvet if it was socially acceptable.” -George Costanza

This improved design includes a stage on the inside of the back cover. Added height allows the pages to rest more comfortably.

The cover features a recessed window, fit with glow-in-the-dark tape that screams “open me here”.
